What is Veldtschoen construction?

While many of our shoes are constructed using the venerable Goodyear Welt—a standard of quality—some of our most rugged country boots and shoes utilise a different, even more robust technique: the Veldtschoen welt construction. If you’ve ever sought a classic leather shoe or boot that offers exceptional water resistance without compromising timeless style, understanding this method is crucial to your footwear browsing.

In this tell-all guide, we demystify this complex-sounding term, explain its profound differences from a Goodyear Welt, and show you why it’s the construction of choice for Cheaney’s most robust footwear collection.

Article Summary:

  • The Veldtschoen construction is an alternative method for creating water-resistant and durable shoes and boots, making it ideal for rugged or wet conditions.
  • Pronounced “Velt-skoon,” it is a South African term meaning “field shoe.”
  • Unlike the Goodyear Welt, the Veldtschoen design flares outward, sits on top of the welt, and is sewn through the outsole (and midsole if present), creating an additional barrier around the entire circumference.
  • Like all high-quality Cheaney footwear, Veldtschoen shoes and boots are fully resoleable (with a storm welt*), ensuring they can last for many years of adventurous wear.

What is Veldtschoen construction?

The Veldtschoen meaning

First, we need to define Veldtschoen. Veldtschoen is a sophisticated, traditional construction method that results in a shoe with exceptional resistance to water ingress. It is specifically designed to create a strong, durable, and weather-resistant seal between the upper leather and the sole unit.

Veldtschoen origins

The term is Afrikaans, originating from South Africa, where it literally translates to “field shoe.” Its history is linked to boots designed for military and outdoor use, where ruggedness and water-resistance were paramount.

The Veldtschoen pronunciation

You may be wondering how to pronounce this long, unusual word.

The pronunciation for Veldtschoen is velt-skoon or felt-skoon; vɛltˌskʊn or fɛltˌskʊn, with the stress on the first syllable. It is a word of Afrikaans origin and is pronounced similar to “veldt-shoe,” but with the “sch” sounding like the “sk” in “skunk”.

The Veldtschoen construction method

The Veldtschoen construction method

In most constructions, the upper leather is lasted (pulled over the last) and folded inwards before being attached to the welt. However, in a Veldtschoen construction, the process is dramatically different:

The true ingenuity of Veldtschoen construction lies in how the upper leather is deliberately integrated with the sole unit to create a near-watertight seal.

  • The Foundation: The process begins with an insole (an inner leather board, the same that is used in Goodyear Welting) but with a specialised internal rib measurement.
  • Lasting: The lining is lasted to the rib, glued to the toe, and tacked in the side lasting, while the upper is only pulled over to shape the last and is not attached to the rib.
  • The First Stitch (Welt Attachment): The welt (a thick strip of leather) is stitched through the lining and rib. This creates a secure, raised channel.
  • The Upper Flange: The main upper leather is then splayed and folded outward (flanged) to rest directly atop the welt. This is the characteristic feature that immediately sheds water away from the shoe’s interior.
  • The Final Stitch (Outsole/Upper Attachment): A second, visible stitch is applied. This stitch runs through the outwardly splayed upper leather, the welt, the midsole, and through to the outsole.

This outward folding creates an almost impenetrable barrier, as water slides off and follows the direction of the upper away from the inside of the shoe of leather and stitching to reach the inside, a near impossibility under normal wet weather circumstances.

This method of construction requires highly technical, experienced hands, as it is a highly specialised technique. Only a select few brands make Veldtschoen footwear, and Cheaney is one of them. It is a production method usually used to make English country shoes and boots.

Veldtschoen vs Goodyear Welted: What’s the difference?

Traditionally, Goodyear-welted footwear, the typical construction method for most of our shoes, involves the rib passing through the upper leather and lining. A Veldtschoen shoe contains all the same components of a Goodyear Welted Shoe. However, the leather upper is turned out and stitched above the welt, rather than wrapped underneath and stitched beneath the welt. This durable construction method results in a comfortable, yet robust shoe that is arguably more water-resistant due to the stitching system.

While both are hallmarks of high-quality shoemaking, their attachment methods are what set them apart. Here is a breakdown of their differences:

FeatureVeldtschoen ConstructionGoodyear Welt Construction
Upper AttachmentThe upper leather is turned outwards and stitched directly through the midsole (if present) and outsole. The upper leather and lining are turned inwards and stitched to a canvas rib (the gemming) on the insole.
Water ResistanceSuperior. The outward flange actively channels water away, creating a highly effective waterproof seal.Good.  A high-quality standard, relying on a tighter seal at the welt/upper joint.
AestheticVisually robust and rugged, often featuring a broader, more splayed edge profile.Generally sleeker, with a more vertical side profile.
Ideal UseCountryside, adverse weather, rugged terrain, and field use.Business, city walking, general use, and dress occasions.

Is it possible to get a Veldtschoen resole?

Absolutely! Just like our Goodyear Welted collection, one of the greatest advantages of Veldtschoen construction is that the process is entirely conducive to restoration. The sturdy midsole and welt can be separated from the outsole, allowing a skilled cobbler, such as one of our craftspeople in our Northamptonshire factory, to fit a brand-new sole unit, ensuring your cherished footwear remains a loyal companion for years to come.

*However, a caveat to this is that we can’t re-veldt this; it would have to be switched out for a storm Goodyear welt to achieve a similar effect.
