Leather Footwear for Every Weather: Shoe Staples for Transition Seasons

Dressing for transition seasons can be tricky. With changeable weather on the cards and shifting temperatures, with some days feeling like spring and others like we’ve stepped back into winter, deciding on the best footwear for the season is a constant dilemma.

If you feel your feet are too hot or cold in the spring and autumn, we’re here to help! We at Cheaney want to help you choose the best shoe styles for transitional seasons, ensuring your feet are dry in rainy weather but not too hot when the sun comes out.

What is a transitional shoe?

A transitional shoe is versatile enough to be comfortable in spring and autumn. As spring and autumn weather is typically changeable, these shoes are ready for all weather conditions, including wet, windy, and sunny weather.

Typically, transitional shoes will be breathable so your feet can breathe if the sun comes out, but without having any open-foot or open-toe features, as the weather in spring and autumn can sometimes still be chilly.

Can you still wear boots in spring?

Boots are not typically traditional shoes. Styles like black ankle boots are best for colder months during the winter, and with taller necks, they can be too warm in transitional seasons. However, short or ankle boot styles like Chelsea boots or chukka boots are good footwear options for brisker spring and autumn days.

What shoes do I need for spring?

You will need the following shoe types for a complete spring footwear wardrobe. Whether heading to work, socialising on the weekend, or going to a more formal occasion, make sure you have these spring footwear choices in your wardrobe.

Trainers

As the weather starts to warm up, you might swap your leather boots for more comfortable and breathable trainers for your casual weekend wardrobe. Stay more comfortable in warmer weather with the breathable canvas and mesh you get on trainers. These lightweight and versatile shoes are the ideal casual spring essentials.

Oxfords

For more formal occasions during spring or the best shoes for the office, make sure you have a reliable pair of Oxfords. Swap your winter boots for these shoes to give your ankles a well-earned breather as the weather starts to warm up while maintaining a professional and polished look.

Derbys

If we have a pleasant spring, Oxfords might be too restrictive and stuffy, especially towards the end of spring. Derby shoes feature an open-lacing design, whereas Oxford shoes have a closed-lacing design. The former gives you more freedom of movement, perfect for warmer days when you still need to look presentable.

Suede has natural water-resistant properties, even more so in this Repello suede; when combined with a steadfast goodyear welt and sturdy commando soles, the Whinfell will be your go-to in dry and wet conditions alike.

Boat Shoes

The classic boat shoe is an essential part of any gentlemen’s footwear collection. Taking inspiration from all things nautical, these men’s boat shoes are the epitome of refined elegance. With a unique design and construction, boat shoes are a firm favourite with those looking to replicate the classic preppy style. No longer restricted for the boat decks, they’re ideal for summer months with a pair of shorter length trousers.

Chelsea boots

You’ve heard of March winds and April showers, so don’t put all your winter boots into storage yet! If you’re commuting to the office or heading out and the weather is promising unpredictability, opt for warm and splash-protected ankles with a pair of Chelsea boots.

Because of their ankle boot style, Chelsea boots are ideal for easily transitioning from winter to spring. They keep your feet warm and dry while still allowing them to breathe.  Many of our Chelsea boots feature a Goodyear welted sole, which provides water-resistant protection against unexpected spring showers.

Chukka boots

Chukka boots are a great transition boot for spring. While still a boot, the collar is low to protect your ankles from the spring chill. It is also not as restrictive as other boot styles, typically reserved for winter.

The best colours and leathers for spring

When choosing spring and transitional footwear, you also want to consider the colour and leather type that will best suit the season.

Put away your black and dark brown leathers and opt for lighter colours like Almond, Beige, Chesnut, Leaf, Tan and White to transition into spring.

You might also want to swap your leather boots and shoes for more breathable suede, perfect for keeping your feet cool on warmer spring days.
