This collection of handmade shoes is dedicated to Flight Lieutenant Joseph Humfrey Cheaney. Served his country 1940-1945
Flight Lieutenant Dick Cheaney volunteered for service in the RAF and initially trained on the de Havilland DH 82 Tiger Moth. On one of his early solo flights he got lost in fog. Running low on fuel and realising that he was not going to make it back to his airfield, he had to find a suitable landing site. He managed to land in a field, to be greeted by an umbrella-wielding old lady, who wanted to know if he was flying a Spitfire! He served with distinction in 233 Squadron throughout the Second World War, receiving a King’s Commendation. Once peace was declared, he resumed his responsibilities at Cheaney
