At Cheaney, we specialise in the manufacture of Goodyear welted shoes and boots. The Goodyear Welted construction gets its strength, durability and repair qualities by stitching the upper leather, lining leather and welt (a specially prepared piece of leather) to the ribbing that has already been bonded to the insole. The welt is then stitched to the leather or rubber sole. It is this final stitch, holding the sole in place, which we can cut through enabling complete removal of the sole without causing damaging the upper which enables us to offer a full refurbishment service. Goodyear welted shoes and boots provide superior cushioning, comfort, durability and longevity. Explore all our Goodyear welted shoes and welted boots to experience the quality for yourself, including our Oxfords and brogues.
The ‘Goodyear welted’ method gets its name from Charles Goodyear Jr., who created the machinery used for this technique back in 1869. Goodyear welted shoes and welted boots are constructed through this method, whereby the upper leather, lining leather and welt of a shoe is stitched to ribbing bonded onto the insole, before then being stitched onto the outer sole. The cavity created by the welt between this insole and outer sole is filled with cork, providing strength, insulation and superior comfort.
At Cheaney Shoes, we specialise in creating footwear through the Goodyear welting method in our Northamptonshire factory. From our brogues to our boots, you can explore a wide range of Goodyear welted shoes and Goodyear welted boots in a huge variety of designs throughout our men’s and women’s footwear collections. As the Goodyear method enables the removal of our soles without causing any damage to the upper, at Cheaney, we offer a full refurbishment service, should you need it.
