Before you polish your shoes, ensure that they aren’t wet, insert your shoe trees, remove the laces, and give the shoes a good once over with a horse hair brush. You want to make sure there’s no dirt or dust on the leather before you apply any products.

Please use this as a guide, but feel free to use some creative licence within reason.
