In Collaboration with Checkland Kindleysides, the Cheaney Store, Coal Drops Yard, Kings Cross, London has just won:
Drapers Best Footwear Store Design 2019
The Coal Drops Yard store has a creative, out-of-the-ordinary design, in keeping with the scheme. Situated in the arches of the original coal drops, the store design references vaulted spaces: railway bridges, carriages and wine cellars. Designer Checkland Kindleysides took inspiration from a Pullman carriage. The metal timber and structure creates a vaulted framework from which to hang merchandising.
Collections are presented in the centre of the store on a large “cutting” table, reminiscent of those in Cheaney’s Northamptonshire factory. The blue felt table features silhouettes of a shoemaker’s tools and patterns that have been cut out to reveal leathers beneath. There is also a polishing station where shoppers can get a shine on their shoes free of charge. Judges said Cheaney was a clear winner with an outstanding shopfit that is a great example of localising a brand to a distinctive environment.
